Artisan Gotō Kenjō (後藤顕乗).
Era Early Edo period.
Explanation Kenjō was the second son of the fifth master Tokujō. His childhood name was Toraichi; his common name was Gen’ichirō; and his personal name (imina) was Mitsutsune. Later he established a separate house and called himself Rihei Masatsugu. Because his elder brother Eijō died young at the age of forty-one, Kenjō succeeded to the main Gotō line as the seventh generation, acting as guardian for Mitsushige (i.e., Sokujō).
He was also invited by the Maeda family of Kaga and was granted a stipend of 150 koku; together with his cousin Kakujō, he served in alternating years, thereby contributing to the development of Kaga metalwork.
This nisomono is executed entirely in black and takes a tachi koshirae as its compositional subject. The motif is unusual, and moreover it possesses a high degree of dignity—truly a work befitting Kenjō. The menuki bears the split edge signature “Gotō · Kenjō”; notably, Tokujō’s own signed mitsudōgu in the possession of the Owari Tokugawa family has menuki with a comparable split edge signature reading “Toku · jō.” Accordingly, Kenjō’s split edge signature here is extremely valuable and should serve as an important reference example.
