This is a tanto by Kaneyuki, a smith of the Tegai school in Yamato province, dated to 1416. It is designated as a Juyo Token by the NBTHK. The blade has a rare inscription on the reverse side, suggesting it was specially made as a uma-zashi (horse-riding dagger). The koshirae is a faithful reproduction of the uma-zashi koshirae from Horyuji Temple's Saiendo Hall, made by the late Shigero Sugimoto.
