Yamato Province (Nara) · Heian–Nanbokuchō
Yamato is the oldest of the five traditions, rooted in the temple-smiths of Nara who forged for the warrior-monks of the great monasteries. Its blades favour masame (straight) grain and standing yak-ba in suguha, austere and strong. Five schools — Tegai, Taima, Shikkake, Hōshō, and Senjuin — carry the tradition.
