This blade was signed by Bishu Osafune Sukesada (備州長船祐定) in the 16th year of Tenbun era (1547: the late Muromachi period). Bishu, also known as Bizen, is the name of the province located in today’s Okayama prefecture. Osafune is one of the most prosperous schools in this province during the Muromachi period, and Sukesada is the maker’s name. Swordsmiths in the Bizen province at the end of the Muromachi period (1492-1569 A.D) are referred to as Matsu Bizen (meaning “end Bizen”). The Sukesada school was one of the most famous and flourishing schools, particularly among the Osafune schools (the head branch). Over generations, there were various styles forged by the Sukesada lineage. Around 60 swordsmiths used Sukesada as their maker’s name, making it a renowned brand among Samurai. The Bizen swordsmiths produced many swords during the Muromachi period, especially during the Sengoku period (the Warring States period). The demand for high-quality weapons grew as feudal lords required more swords for battle. It is highly possible that this blade was commissioned by a Samurai and may have been carried into battle during the period of intense rivalry between warlords. This History of Bizen Osafune School It is said that Osafune school was founded by Mitsutada (光忠), who was active during the mid-Kamakura period. Bizen Osafune school was the biggest one of all other schools in Bizen province, and they received many orders from feudal lords or renowned Samurai. They were called Osafunemono and were beloved by Samurai warriors. Among the swordsmiths who belonged to this school, Nagamitsu, Sanenaga, and Kagemitsu are known as Osafune Sansaku, the three renowned Osafune swordsmiths. There are also four other prominent swordsmiths who were from Bizen Osafune school. They are called Osafune Shiten-no, the four masters of Osafune school. Their names are Nagamitsu, Kanemitsu, Nagayoshi, and Motoshige. BIZEN is located near the Chugoku Mountains, where iron sands, one of the essential materials for making Japanese swords, were abundant. Furthermore, BIZEN swordsmiths had close access to the Yoshi River, where they could find water and charcoal. This geological location contributed to the swordsmiths forging high-quality refined blades. We presume BIZEN was quite active in sword-forging from ancient times. It is said that BIZEN DEN was created by groups of swordsmiths there during the late Heian era (Late 12th century). These ancient swordsmiths in Bizen province are called Ko-Bizen (Old Bizen) swordsmiths. By inheriting the sword forging techniques from Ko-Bizen swordsmiths, the Bizen Osafune school flourished from the mid-Kamakura period. Homare Kizu (誉疵) We see what appears to be a Homare Kizu (誉疵), which tells us that this blade was used in a battle. Homare means honorable, and Homare Kizu is considered a good blade characteristic that tells us its history. This blade is appraised as a Hozon Touken (保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: 日本美術刀剣保存協会). *Please keep in mind that there are a couple of noticeable Kitae Kizu on this blade. Fuchi-Kashira The Kikkou (亀甲, turtle’s shell) pattern is used for the Fuchi-Kashira. It is a continuous geometric pattern connecting regular hexagons up and down. A theory says that this design was brought from China and the Korean Peninsula during the Asuka (飛鳥, 592-710) and Nara (奈良, 710-794) periods. A proverb says turtles live long lives; therefore, turtle and turtle shell patterns represent longevity. In addition, as this continuous hexagonal pattern does not get out of its shape, it is said people wished for eternal prosperity by using this design. The metal part of the saya (scabbard) end also features the same pattern, creating a sense of unity in the design. Tsuka and Menuki The motif of this menuki is a dragon (龍, Ryu). Originally, dragons were mythical creatures found in ancient traditions and myths from various cultures. In Japan, the dragon is regarded as a symbol of good fortune and auspicious signs. Its body is said to resemble nine different animals: the antlers of a deer, the head of a camel, the eyes of a demon, the neck of a snake, the belly of mizuchi (蛟, a mythical Japanese creature that resembles a snake with a horn and four legs), the scales of a fish, the claws of a falcon, the palms of a tiger, and the ears of a cow. Due to its unique and fearsome appearance, the dragon was believed to reign at the top of all creatures. Tsuba and Habaki The theme of this tsuba is the cherry blossom (桜, sakura), a flower deeply associated with spring in Japan and admired for centuries. Cherry blossoms are not only a popular motif in sword mountings but also appear in traditional Japanese costumes, such as kimono, and in various forms of decoration and furnishings. One theory suggests that the god of grain resides within cherry blossoms, making this flower a symbol of a bountiful harvest. In ancient times, people gathered under cherry blossom trees to pray for a good harvest, and it is believed that this custom gave rise to the modern tradition of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing picnics. Authentication Paper They authenticated the blade on August 23rd in the 6th year of Reiwa (2024). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society.
