Artisan Kagemitsu
Era Late period; dated Gentoku 2 (1330), 10th month (day unspecified)
Explanation Kagemitsu was the son of Nagamitsu and the third generation of the line, renowned for having perfected . His dated works extend over a period of more than thirty years, from Kagen at the end of the period through Kenmu in the early period. Compared with Nagamitsu, his work is less frequently flamboyant. His tempering often consists of a basis incorporating that incline in reverse, or compositions in which forms the principal theme. In general, his manner is calmer than that of his father; however, it is noteworthy that in the quality of his forging one encounters examples that surpass even Nagamitsu. Another characteristic is that, unlike Nagamitsu—who left comparatively few—many by Kagemitsu survive today.
This , of nearly standard dimensions, presents an elegant inward-curving . The forging shows tightly worked mixed with ; extremely fine adhere; fine are present; and appears distinctly. The , centered on , displays abundant and is -predominant with . These features clearly express Kagemitsu’s distinctive traits. The refined forging with its very fine is especially beautiful, and the is likewise typical of this smith; moreover, the clearly remaining characters of the signature on the tang are particularly pleasing.
