Explanation The first generation Kanekuni belonged to a late line of the Yamato group and relocated to Sunpu. However, because his workmanship and the manner of his signature so closely resemble those of Nanki Shigekuni, he was traditionally regarded as the person as Shigekuni. Yet, after Shigekuni moved to Wakayama in Province, there are works by Kanekuni made in Suruga during the ’ei era; it is therefore clear that they are different individuals.
Moreover, the theory that Kanekuni was Shigekuni’s father has no supporting materials, and must await future research. Still, there is no doubt that the two were swordsmiths of the school and the time.
This is an outstanding work by the first generation Kanekuni: both and are well covered with , and it preserves the tradition.
