He used a variant of the characters for Mitsutoshi in his youth, and also had the artistic names Nansensai and Senyu which he used in his later years. A skilled poet, Mitsutoshi lived in the current Kanda district of Tokyo and passed away in 1863. This remarkable work is a bold depiction of Shishi superbly carved in gold and attests to the outstanding skill of the Machibori lineage continuing from the Yokoya to the Yanagawa to the Kikuoka schools.
