Artisan Masakata (政方), Bitchū province (備中)
Era Late Edo period (date not stated)
Explanation The tang bears the long inscription: “Bitchū Province, Chiya—Kida Masakata, having made the steel, forged this in response to demand; made at the same place,” and it further records a stamp (read as “Chiya”). The blade is notable for its powerful proportions: a wide mihaba, mitsu-mune, comparatively little taper from base to tip, and a somewhat deep curvature with an extended chū-kissaki.
The forging is a closely worked itame with ji-nie, into which chikei is seen. The temper is especially vigorous: gunome-chōji and gunome mingle with ko-notare, with ashi and a deep nioiguchi. Strongly adhering nie, together with prominent yubashiri and tobiyaki, creates a conspicuous, broadly spread pattern that approaches an all-over tempering (hitatsura-like) effect, and sunagashi, kinsuji, and nie-suji are markedly evident. The boshi follows a generally straight tendency and is strongly worked with hakikake. Overall, this is a robust and dynamic katana that places particular emphasis on vigorous nie activity.
