A very interesting tanto from nambokucho to Oei era. Good activity/hataraki in the hamon is visible. A well forged hada and a lovely shape make for a desirable very early tanto. This sword is a beautiful tanto of gunome midare in itame with much ji-nie. This sword dates back to the 1300’s and has a very good history and is considered by many as a very desirable school to collect. This early tanto dating to the 1300’s is very healthy and robust. This is truly a wonderful koto era tanto from the Hirado Sa line of swordsmiths.The origin of Sa was that he lived in Chikuzen Oki bearch and was the son of Nissai.It was believed at one time that he was one of the 10 great students of Masamune but there is conflicting evidence suggesting this is not true. The Soshu-den style of his work was definitely at the top level of this.The well grained jigane is truly spectacular. This school continued until Nanbokucho periodand after that Sue Sa smiths such as Yasuyohoshi, Yukihiro and Yoshisada were active.This sword is said to be the Hirado-Sa school that was active around middle to late Nanbokucho period.It is a wide and thick tanto and the jigane is clear and refined in the Soshu-den style. 平戸左は、左文字の系統を引く鍛冶のうち、のちに肥前国平戸の地へ移り住んだ一群をいう。説明に拠れば、南北朝期に平戸へ七郎三郎盛広があり、その子に盛吉がいて、盛広を左の一派と伝えるところからこの呼称が生じた。盛広は同銘二、三代を数えるものの如くで、銘鑑には建武と明徳の年紀を掲げ、在銘作のうちには平戸住盛広作と長銘に切るものもある。その子盛吉は銘鑑に盛広の子と記され、室町初期の作とみられる。このほか説示の扱う工に守貞、貞清があり、守貞は二字銘の太刀をもって室町初期、貞清は短刀をもって応永頃と鑑せられている。いずれも左派が本拠の筑前を離れて辺境に移ったのちの作で、相州伝の作風を遠く伝えるものである。 作風は、まず鍛に板目を主とし、刃寄り棟寄りに柾気あるいは柾ごころを交え、地沸がついて白けごころとなる点に一様の傾向がある。盛広の作には大板目に杢を交えて地沸の強いものがあり、盛吉の短刀には板目に柾気が交じる。刃文は浅いのたれ調を基とし、これに互の目や小のたれを交え、沸または小沸がよくつき、砂流しがかかり、金筋の入るものもある。盛吉の短刀では互の目乱れが総じて連れごころとなって盛んに砂流しがかかり、貞清では浅いのたれに互の目を交えて匂い深く沸がよくつく。帽子は乱れ込んで先尖りごころに返るもの、小丸に返るもの、表を火焰風として裏を丸く返すものなどがあり、一定しない。見分けにあたっては、板目に柾気を交えて白ける地鉄と、のたれを基調に沸づいて砂流しのかかる刃を本派の指標とする。 鑑定の要点は、左文字の系統に連なりながら本場の作よりも時代の下る点と、地刃に右の作風を備える点とに置かれる。盛吉の短刀には、その作風から長州の顕国や幸国を思わせるものがあると評されており、辺地に移った同系の鍛冶との通うところがうかがえる。伝来の知られる一口に、大磨上無銘で伝平戸左とされる刀があり、これは幕臣山岡鉄太郎高歩が明治十四年に滋賀県令籠手田安定へ贈ったもので、その旨を茎に金象嵌銘としている。在銘作、わけても長銘は稀有で、無銘の確かな伝とともに、平戸左の存在を裏づけ銘鑑の欠を補う資料として重んじられている。資料の僅少な一派ながら、左派の作風が肥前の地に移し伝えられた跡を示す点に意義が認められる。 詳しく見る →
