Artisan school (当麻派)
Era Late to period
Explanation The school, one of the five major groups of the Yamato tradition, flourished from the late period through the period, taking Kuniyuki as its founder. Reference works such as swordsmith directories enumerate many smiths of this lineage; however, extant signed works are very few, and the majority are unsigned pieces authenticated by appraisal.
Among old authentications (ko-) by the Hon’ami house and others, there are examples in which the in both and stands out with conspicuous strength, and in which and interweave—showing an admixture of -like character. Such works differ from the style seen in the small number of extant signed pieces; yet it is surmised that in former times there existed signed works resembling these.
This displays mixed with and , with a tendency toward ; exceedingly fine forms thickly, and bold enters frequently. The is -based with and mixed in, and along the edge appear , , and ; and enter frequently; the is somewhat deep and adheres thickly, appearing bright and clear; and fine and run through. In these respects, the and strongly manifest characteristics, and the attribution is fully persuasive.
The forging is powerful, with exceedingly fine thickly forming and with bold entering in a reliable manner. In the distinctive -based temper, the bright adheres thickly, producing a vivid and clear appearance. The preservation of both and is also good.
