It has arrived, it has arrived—the appearance of a grand daimyo-class sword that the sword world longs for. This is a masterpiece wakizashi, a special-order piece by Bishu Osafune Shuri no Suke Morimitsu, bearing a precious 2-character mei. Among the "Sanko" (Three Lights) of Oei Bizen—Morimitsu, Yasumitsu, and Moromitsu—who are praised as the master smiths of Osafune Bizen, this is a special-order work by the most popular of them, Morimitsu. Wakizashi by Morimitsu with a 2-character mei have almost no surviving examples; this is a precious wakizashi from the early Muromachi period, circa Oei 10 (1403) (623 years ago). While Morimitsu's hira-zukuri wakizashi are normally a standard length of 1 shaku 2 sun or 3 sun, this wakizashi is a special-order piece with a wonderfully long nagasa. The mune is a shin-no-mune, and it exhibits a fine hira-zukuri wakizashi sugata with a distinct difference between the moto-mihaba and saki-mihaba. The jigane shows the unique, "sticky" itame-hada and mokume-hada of Oei Bizen, with a magnificent bo-utsuri appearing in the ji as if touching the ha, and a vertical utsuri appearing on both the omote and ura toward the saki, which is truly splendid. The horimono are precious: the omote features a powerful bonji representing Fudo Myoo, and the ura features a bonji representing the compassionate Kannon. The hamon is a suguha-style tempered in nioi with nie, resulting in a wonderfully bright and high-class wakizashi. Because signed, precious 2-character mei hira-zukuri wakizashi by Morimitsu were famous as Owazamono during the Sengoku period, they were highly sought after by daimyo as sashiryo and were consumed through use. Consequently, despite his fame, long hira-zukuri wakizashi are almost non-existent today; this is an extremely rare wakizashi whose future advancement (shusse) is highly anticipated. Please enjoy this still-healthy hira-zukuri wakizashi by the ultra-famous Oei Bizen smith Morimitsu, bearing his 2-character mei.
