Artisan Ko-Bizen Sukemura
Era Kamakura period (Ko-Bizen)
Explanation This is a signed (zaimei) tachi by Sukemura of Ko-Bizen. Among the Ko-Bizen smiths, extant signed works by Sukemura are few. His style displays distinct utsuri in the jihada, while the hamon is fundamentally a nie-based suguha with small undulations; it shows features such as nijūba, and at times the tempering is “dropped” at the boundary of the machi, resulting in a subdued and tasteful manner.
Although this tachi is shortened (suriage), it nonetheless presents a dignified form with pronounced koshizori. The forging is itame, with ji-nie and chikei, and clear utsuri appears. The hamon is suguha-chō mixed with ko-midare and gunome; nie adheres well also within the temper, and kinsuji and sunagashi are seen. In addition, it reveals nijūba and yubashiri; thus, one can glimpse the characteristic manner of Sukemura, whose works are rarely encountered. It is a superior example among his extant works, and a valuable reference piece for the study of this smith.
