Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Sadakuni with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate 【Description】 Summary This blade was signed by Sunpu Anzai Jyu Sadakuni (駿府安西住貞国), who was active during the early Edo period (Kanbun era: 1661-1673 ). He belonged to Shimada school, a prestigious school located in Suruga domain (Today’s Shizuoka prefecture). Sunpu is another name for Suruga Domain. Anzai is the name of the town he lived. Shimada School Shimada school was founded by Yoshisuke (義助) during the mid-Muromachi period and lasted by the late Edo period. The group of Shimada swordsmiths resided in Shimada city, Suruga province (today’s Shizuoka prefecture). Other famous swordsmiths from this school are Sukemune, Hirotsugu, and Sadahiro. The first-gen Yoshisuke was active during the Kosho era(1455-57). It is said that the first-gen Yoshisuke was a descendant of Bizen Ichimonji Sukemune, one of the most famous swordsmiths in Japanese history. The first-gen Yoshisuke served a powerful feudal family named Imagawa. It is said that he received his maker’s name 義 from Imagawa Yoshitada. The first-gen Yoshisuke had mastered excellent craftsmanship, and it was passed down to other members of Shimada swordsmiths. And the school flourished during the Muromachi-Edo period. Horimono This blade also has a beautiful Horimono(engraving) of Kurikara Ken. Kurikara-Ken (倶利伽羅剣) is the sword that Fudo Myo-O (不動明王, acalanātha) holds with his right hand. Fudo Myo-O is one of the objects of worship in Buddhism. According to a theory, it is the incarnation of Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来, Mahāvairocana, the principal image of esoteric Buddhism). Kurikara-ken was named due to the appearance that Kurikara Ryu-O (倶利伽羅龍王, dragon) is winding around the sword. It is believed that Kurikara-Ken could cut off worldly desires: Sandoku (三毒). Sandoku is the three fundamental earthly desires; Ton (貪, greed), Jin (瞋, anger, grudge), and Chi (癡, delusion, complaint). It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token (特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value. 【 Blade】 Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) : 69.0 cm ( 27.1 inches) Curvature(Sori) : 1.06 cm ( 0.42 inches) Hamon : The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process Jimon(Jihada) : visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process Nakago : Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged. Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard). Fuchi-Kashira : A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt. This Fuchi Kashira is decorated with dragon designs. Golden paint is applied to these dragons and makes an elegant color contrast with black and gold. Even each scale is meticulously sculpted, and they are depicted with a realistic expression. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake

Shimada school interacted with other schools in Soshu swordsmiths living near Odawa castle in Kanagawa prefecture. The Suruga domain was vital for strong feudal lords such as Takeda, Tokugawa, and Hojo clans during the Sengoku Jidai (Warring state period: Late Muromachi period).
