Perry’s arrival in 1853 unraveled the Tokugawa peace and created the first mass demand for working swords in two centuries. Kiyomaro, called the Masamune of Yotsuya, died on its eve; Munetsugu and Yukihide carried the boom to the end.
This katana by Nagaguti Sadaharu, a student of Gassan Sadakatsu, was made in 1865 (Keio 1) for the Masuda family of Matsumoto Domain. It features a wide blade, large kissaki, and moderate sori, with a thick kasane for durability and bo-hi carvings for balance. The ko-itame hada is tightly forged with ji-nie, and the hamon is gunome-midare with nioi-guchi and kinsuji, culminating in a ko-maru boshi.
