Perry’s arrival in 1853 unraveled the Tokugawa peace and created the first mass demand for working swords in two centuries. Kiyomaro, called the Masamune of Yotsuya, died on its eve; Munetsugu and Yukihide carried the boom to the end.
This katana was made by Nagakuchi Sadaharu in Settsu province during the late Edo period (Keio Gannen, 1865). He was a student of Gassan Sadakichi and used the go 'Kenryushi'. This blade was a custom order for a samurai of the Matsumoto Domain, Masuda-shi. The jitetsu is finely forged in ko-itame, densely packed with a moist appearance, covered entirely in minute ji-nie, resembling a high-quality silk fabric. It is an outstanding work, comparable to that of his fellow disciple, Gassan Sadakazu.
