It has arrived, it has arrived—a famous *meiri* *tanto* by Yamato Hosho Sadasue has arrived. Yamato Hosho Sadasue was of the lineage of Yamato Hosho Sadamune; his era is the Nanbokucho period, around the Joji era (1362) (663 years ago). He is a swordsmith of roughly the same era as Bizen Osafune Kanemitsu and Soshu Akihiro, but his works are so rare that this is the first time even I have had the pleasure of seeing one. I have heard that the name on the *Tokubetsu Kicho Token* appraisal certificate attached to this *tanto*, Mr. Eizo Yamamoto, is a famous and major collector of swords. The *sugata* of this *tanto* displays a *hira-zukuri* form with a noticeable difference between the *moto-haba* and *saki-haba*. The *jigane*, as you can see, is forged in a magnificent *so-masame-hada*. The *hamon* is in *nioi-deki* with *ko-nie*; the *omote* side features a masterful *suguha* style that resembles fallen light snow. The *nakago* also features the *higaki-yasuri* exactly according to the *okite* (traditions) of the school. The *koshirae* is also a splendid, elaborately detailed, and luxurious set featuring a *kuro-ro-saya* made to resemble bamboo. The *saguri-kanagu* features a snail motif, and the *kurigata-kanagu* features a design of peonies, adding further elegance to this *tanto* by Yamato Hosho Sadasue. On this occasion, an elderly *sukisha* (connoisseur) mentioned, "I have grown old, so please pass on this Sadasue *tanto* to someone for a low price," and entrusted it to us. Therefore, we are offering it at a special bargain price. Please enjoy it.

From the close of the Kamakura period into the Nanbokucho, the Hosho school worked in Takaichi District of Yamato Province, the old province whose forging traditions grew up around the great temples of Nara and answered to their need for arms. The line belongs to Yamato-den, one of its five schools alongside Tegai, Senjuin, Shikkake and Taima, and like them it carried the conservative temper of a smithing world bound to monastic patronage.
