This is a tanto by Gassan Sadakatsu, born in Osaka in the second year of Meiji. He inherited the superior skills of his father, Sadakazu, who was a master and Imperial Household Artist. Sadakatsu's work ethic was extremely diligent and strict, and it is said that when forging guardian swords for the Imperial family or sacred swords for Ise Jingu and Meiji Jingu, he would enclose the forging area with bamboo fences, hang curtains, lay out sacred gravel, and pray to the gods and Buddhas.
