About the maker
Horikawa Kunitsugu國次
This is a Juyo Token designated wakizashi by Kunitsugu, the younger brother of Horikawa Kunihiro, from the early Edo period in Yamashiro Province. It features a wide, extended form characteristic of Keicho Shinto blades, with a notare hamon in ko-nie deki and a jizo-style boshi. The jigane shows a zanguri-hada with standing itame and mixed mokume, and mizukage at the machi, all hallmarks of Horikawa works. The yasurime is sakasujikai, a rare feature also seen in his brother Kuniyasu's works, making it a truly unique piece as described by Dr. Honma Kunzan and Dr. Sato Kanzan.
