Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Rai Kunitsugu with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate 【Description】 Summary This blade bears the signature of Hokkyo Rai Kunitsugu, a distinguished swordsmith who was active in Echizen province (present-day Fukui Prefecture). He was a direct apprentice of Yamato Daijo Masanori, a highly regarded smith in the region. Originally from Yamashiro province (modern-day Kyoto), Rai Kunitsugu moved to Echizen after being invited by the powerful Matsudaira clan. Under Masanori’s guidance, three prominent apprentices were active—Yamashiro Daijo Kunitsugu, Izumi no Kami Kunitsugu, and Echizen Daijo Kunitsugu. Rai Kunitsugu was the son of Echizen Daijo Kunitsugu. An additional inscription on this blade reads Nyudo Jutetsu (入道寿徹), indicating that the smith had entered Buddhist monastic life and adopted the name Jutetsu. While the character “徹” (Tetsu) has become illegible due to wear over time, the blade has been authenticated as a work by Rai Kunitsugu by the NBTHK (The Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords). The term Nyudo refers to the act of renouncing worldly life and entering the Buddhist path. It was not uncommon for samurai or artisans to take a Buddhist name upon reaching a certain age or stage in life. Rai Kunitsugu is believed to have continued his work as a swordsmith under the name Jutetsu after becoming a monk. Yamato Daijo Masanori (His mater) Yamato Daijo Masanori was born in Miyatsu city, Tango koku (northern Koyoto prefecture). He was especially active during the early Edo period(the 13th year of Keisho-the fourth year of Keian : 1608-1651). It is said that Masanori was a descendant of Yamashiro koku Sanjyo Yoshinori(山城国三条吉則), one of the most famous swordsmiths during the Muromachi period(Prior to Edo period). After learning the sword-forging technique from Norimitsu(則光), his father, in Miyatsu city, Masanori moved to Kyoto city. Masanori was eventually noticed and supported by Matsudaira Hideyasu, the third son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo government. Hideysu was the feudal lord of Echizen province during the early Edo period. He then moved to Echizen province to serve the Matsudaira clan. He became an Okakaekaji for Matsudaira Tadanao(松平忠直), who was the first son of Matsudaira Hideyasu. An Okakaekaji means those who exclusively forged swords for specific Samurai or clan. It was honorable for any makers to serve this position back then. He also received an official title of Yamato Daijyo from the emperor for his excellent craftsmanship. Kunitsugu, his apprentice, must have mastered superb level of craftsmanship from Masanori. It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token (特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value. *Please keep in mind that there are a couple of noticeable Kitae Kizu as well as tiny chip on this blade.
