Description Keijō: Shinogi-zukuri with ihori-mune; wide mihaba; deep koshi-zori with noticeable funbari; extended chū-kissaki. Kitae: Ko-itame-hada densely forged; thick ji-nie appears and is clear and bright. Hamon: Shōran-midare (billowing-wave midare); with ashi; deep nioi; conspicuous ko-nie; the nioiguchi is bright and clear; abundant sunagashi activity. Bōshi: Ko-maru. Horimono: On both sides bō-hi, long and finished in kaki-nagashi style. Nakago: Ubu; nakago-jiri iriyamagata; yasurime sujikai with kesho-yasuri accents; one mekugi-ana.
Artisan This work is by Tsuda Ōmi no Kami Sukenao (津田近江守助直), a swordsmith of the Osaka Shintō tradition associated with the Tsuda line, known for vigorous, wave-like midare temper patterns in the manner favored in the Genroku era.
Era Dated Genroku 6 (1693), second month.
Explanation The date “Genroku 6” represents the latest work by Sukenao that has been known up to the present, and this blade is regarded as the outstanding masterpiece among his extant oeuvre.
