Sengoku Seki was an industry: smiths organized under their tutelary Kasuga shrine, arming the war bands of central Japan. Magoroku Kanemoto’s sanbonsugi and the finest Kanesada work prove quality survived inside mass production.
This is a naginata attributed to Itakura Seki Masatoshi, dating from the late Muromachi period (Eisho era). It is unsigned (mumei) but has been appraised as a work by this smith. The naginata features a robust body with a well-packed ko-itame hada and a gunome midare hamon. It comes with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Token certificate.
