Sengoku Seki was an industry: smiths organized under their tutelary Kasuga shrine, arming the war bands of central Japan. Magoroku Kanemoto’s sanbonsugi and the finest Kanesada work prove quality survived inside mass production.
This katana was made by Masatoshi, a swordsmith from Sakakura Seki in Mino province during the late Muromachi period (around the Tenbun era). Masatoshi was the leader of the Sakakura Seki group, who had a forge in Sakakura village near the confluence of the Kiso River. The blade has a robust appearance with a moderate curve and a medium point.
