This is a wakizashi that has been greatly shortened (o-suriage) from a longer tachi to suit the owner's body or sword style, and is attributed to the Tegai school. The Tegai school was led by Kanenaga, who established a forge in front of Todai-ji Temple's Tenkai-mon in Yamato Province from the late Kamakura to the Nanbokucho period. Their style featured masame-hada (straight grain steel) and strong nie (nioi crystals) in a suguha (straight temper line) hamon.
