Description

This kogai, signed by Kaiyama Oei (a high-ranking student of Otsuki Koko), features a bold design of a full moon and plum blossoms. The plum blossoms are rendered in simple katakiribori, emphasizing the coolness of the moon. The overall gold plating (kin fukumi) suggests a twilight scene rather than a dark night, adding to its elegant charm. The meticulous depiction of the plum tree captures the texture of an ancient tree, with the moon executed in high relief with silver iroe. The cat-scratch file marks on the reverse are characteristic of the Otsuki school.
