This is a katana made by Sugawara Kanenori, an Imperial Household Artist, at the age of 82. It was forged from the leftover steel of a sacred sword made for the Shikinen Sengu (rebuilding) of the Ise Grand Shrine. The tang is inscribed with this information, making it a highly valuable and rare piece. Kanenori was born in Hoki Province in Tenpo 3 (1832), served the Ikeda family, moved to Kyoto Horikawa in Bunkyu 3 (1863), and forged a sword for Emperor Komei at the recommendation of Prince Arisugawa Taruhito, earning the title Noto no Kami.
