NihontoWatch江戸時代後期から明治にかけて活躍した帝室技芸員、宮本包則の作品。 宮本能登守包則は、天保元年8月25日、伯耆国武田村大柿（現：鳥取県-倉吉市大柿）の造り酒屋を営む旧家に生まれ、嘉永4年、22才で刀工を志して、備前長船横山祐包の門人となり、備前伝の鍛刀を学ぶ。安政4年、因幡藩倉吉の家老：荒尾志摩の抱工となり、さらに文久3年、京都有栖川熾仁親王の信任を得て、孝明天皇の御剣を鍛造し、慶応2年37才の時、能登守を受領。明治19年、同郷の因幡の刀工である日置仁平兼次と共に、伊勢神宮の宝剣・鉾・鏃などを精鍛、さらに明治39年4月に月山貞一と共に帝室技芸員の栄職につき皇室の刀剣類を謹鍛するなど、数々の栄誉ある大業を果たした名工である。大正15年10月24日97才で没した。 本作は浅く内反りのつき、鎌倉時代の作を想起させる優美な短刀姿に、地鉄、小板目肌微細によくつみ、刃文、匂出来の互の目乱れに、帽子小丸に大きく焼き下げ、微細な金筋・砂流しを交えて良く纏まっている。

Meiji: survival after the edict
The Haitōrei edict of 1876 ended sword wearing and nearly ended the craft itself. Military demand and imperial patronage kept a remnant alive, and in 1906 Gassan Sadakazu and Miyamoto Kanenori were named Artists to the Imperial Household.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
