NihontoWatch宮本包則は嘉永四年横山祐包に入門して作刀を学び、独立後は因州池田家に仕えた。有栖川宮熾仁親王の知遇を得て明治天皇の御剣、伊勢神宮の宝刀、正倉院の宝剣などを手掛け、明治三十九年には帝室技芸員を拝命した月山貞一と並ぶ近代の名手。 本作は茎に「贈為赤星平馬君中山博道」とあり、武徳会藩士も務めた剣豪中山博道より三菱地所初代社長赤星陸治の長男赤星平馬の守刀として贈られたことがわかる。

Meiji: survival after the edict
The Haitōrei edict of 1876 ended sword wearing and nearly ended the craft itself. Military demand and imperial patronage kept a remnant alive, and in 1906 Gassan Sadakazu and Miyamoto Kanenori were named Artists to the Imperial Household.
