This tanto is signed by Sugawara Kanenori, an Imperial Household Artist (Teishitsu Gigeiin) who studied under Yokoyama Sukekane. It is inscribed as a gift from the swordsman Nakayama Hakudo to Akahoshi Heima, the eldest son of Akahoshi Rikuji, the first president of Mitsubishi Estate. Kanenori was a master smith of the modern era, alongside Gassan Sadakazu, and worked on imperial swords and treasures.
