Description

It has appeared, it has appeared—a *hira-zukuri* *tanto* by Sukesada, a Bizen Osafune smith of the *shinto* period, which has been carefully passed down through an old family for generations. Please consider it a piece that would be wonderful if it were of the rank of Yokoyama Kozuke Daijo Fujiwara Sukesada. This *tanto* was crafted around the 14th year of Genroku (1701) (325 years ago), exactly the time when the great incident occurred where Asano Takumi-no-kami, the Lord of the Ako Domain, struck down the *koke* Kira Kozuke-no-suke in the Pine Corridor of the palace, beginning the tale of the Ako Roshi's righteous rebellion. This *tanto* exhibits a *hira-zukuri* *tanto* *sugata* with a difference between the *moto-mihaba* and *saki-mihaba* and a noticeable *sori*. As for the *jigane*, while it is difficult to discern clearly as you can see, it appears to be forged in *itame-hada*. The *hamon* is also not clearly visible, but it is tempered in a Bizen-den *gunome-ba* in *nioi-deki* with *ko-nie* attached. The inclusion of an Edo-period *koshirae* with a gold-colored *tsuba* is a welcome addition that adds further splendor to this *tanto*. On this occasion, we have received this Sukesada *tanto* from an old family who passed it down through generations; as they have grown old, they asked us to pass it on cheaply to someone who will cherish it, hoping it might be a work of the rank of Yokoyama Kozuke Daijo Fujiwara Sukesada. Therefore, we are offering it at a special, ultra-low price that could be considered the cost of the *koshirae* alone. Please, by all means, enjoy it.

Sukesada (祐定) is the great name of late-Muromachi Osafune, the most prosperous of the Bizen forges that scholars group together as Sue-Bizen. The signature was carried by a body of smiths so large that the early-modern reference Hayami-dashi lists as many as twenty-one who appended a zokumyo (common name) to distinguish themselves, and the published commentary is blunt that of all the late-Osafune families the Sukesada line was the largest and most productive. Two registers of work issue from this single name. Learn more →
