NihontoWatchNihontoWatch江戸時代初期に京より江戸に移住した赤坂鐔工は、京透とは異なる独特の草体化した意匠で人気を集め、後に江戸に隆盛した「粋」なる美意識の草創に影響を与えたとも考えられている。赤坂四代目の忠時の手になる、乱舞するような燕を意匠したこの鐔も、流れるような曲線の組み合わせからなり、さらに赤坂の風合いをも湛えている。耳際を薄手に仕立てた地鉄は細やかな石目地を施されて渋い色合いを呈し、茎櫃には赤坂独特の合せ鍛えの鍛着層が鮮明。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
