NihontoWatchNihontoWatch楼閣と聞いて想像するのは「砂上の楼閣」ということわざであろう。しかし、負の意味合いを持つ楼閣図では、鍔の意匠として不適切であり、楼閣図には別に深遠なる寓意が隠されていると考えるべきであろう。 今から千年以上前に范仲淹(はん ちゅうえん)という北宋の政治家がいた。彼の特異な点は、儒教的価値観を如何に政治・社会に浸透させ、これを世に反映させるかという実効性を重視していた点である。 ある時、役人の滕子京（とうしけい）という人物が岳陽楼（がくようろう）という楼閣を修築し、友人である范仲淹に記念文の執筆を依頼したという。范仲淹は『岳陽楼記』と呼ばれる祝文を認め、左遷された滕子京を慰めるとともに、岳陽楼の修築完成を祝したという。この文中にあるのが「先天下之憂而憂、後天下之楽而楽」（天下に先んじて憂え、天下の人々が楽しんだ後に楽しむ）の一文である。 楼閣とは、遠方を見渡し、外敵を警戒するための要所であると同時に、次第に階位が上がる立身出世の象徴でもある。頂に立った者だけが目にすることのできる絶景は、地上の民草には決して垣間見えぬ景色であろう。しかし、楼閣の頂上から何を見るかでその人物の真価が決する。 江戸の鍔工、赤坂忠時が手がけた「楼閣図鐔」には、わずか数寸の金属面に、繊細な毛彫りで楼閣が刻まれている。注文主がこの鐔に託したのは、まさに『岳陽楼記』に記された士の理想と内省の精神であったのだろう。小さな鐔面に凝縮されたこの精神世界は、武士が日々手にする刀の一部として、彼の生き様を傍らから見続けてきたことであろう。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
