NihontoWatchNihontoWatch大輪の菊花を鐔全面に意匠した赤坂五代目忠時の作。赤坂鐔の醍醐味は、独特の意匠からなる曲線構成の透かしが生み出す景色にある。菊花形耳のバランスが良く、葉もまた大胆に花に重ね添えて変化に富み、透しも自然な曲線を成し、殊に花の先端がくるっと曲がった様子が美しい。色黒くねっとりとした光沢がある地鉄、わずかに碁石形に仕立てられたなだらかな地面、そこに施された微かな毛彫。いずれも赤坂美の要素として完成している。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
