Please wait a moment. 本名は宮本志賀彦。宮本能登守包則は、天保元年8月25日、伯耆国武田村大柿(現:鳥取県-倉吉市大柿)の造り酒屋を営む旧家に生まれました。嘉永4年、 22才で刀工を志して、備前長船横山祐包の門人となり、備前伝の鍛刀を学びます。安政4年、因幡藩倉吉の家老:荒尾志摩の抱工となり、さらに文久3年、京都有栖川熾仁親王の信任を得て、孝明天皇の御剣を鍛造し、慶応2年37才の時、能登守を受領しました。その後も明伊勢神宮の宝剣・鉾・鏃など多数を精鍛し、明治39年4月に月山貞一と共に帝室技芸員(人間国宝)の栄職を得て専ら皇室の刀剣類を謹鍛します。大正15年10月24日97才の高齢で没するまで、鳥取、倉吉、京都、東京等各地で鍛刀し活躍しました。 この短刀は、明治二年十一月日於京三条作と茎にある通り、京都で鍛刀された作品で、現存作品において乱れ刃紋の短刀は少ないことから貴重な一振となります。また、彫刻も自身の彫であると鑑せられるスッキリとしたもので刀身をピリッと引き締めて誠に美しい一振りとなっております。地鉄は良く詰んだ小板目肌で地沸ついて淡く映りが立つように見えています。刃紋は大きく乱れた互の目刃紋が連ね、匂い明るく沸が冴えてつきます。刃中には砂流し掛かり、金線が走って働きます。帽子は焼刃深く先地蔵風になって小丸へ返ります。本作は能登守宮本包則の代表作品と言っても過言でない上手の短刀であり、現在の人間国宝の名に恥じない傑出した出来栄えを示した同作中の優品です。

Meiji: survival after the edict
The Haitōrei edict of 1876 ended sword wearing and nearly ended the craft itself. Military demand and imperial patronage kept a remnant alive, and in 1906 Gassan Sadakazu and Miyamoto Kanenori were named Artists to the Imperial Household.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
