This blade was signed by Hizenkoku Jyu Hirosada(肥前国住人広貞), also known as Hizen Yoshi-Ie(肥前吉家) in the early Edo period( 1622-1644). He was an apprentice of Tadayoshi, one of the greatest swordsmiths in the early Edo period. Hirosada was also Tadayoshi’s son-in-law. His real name is Hashimoto Honsouemon(橋本本惣右衛門). Hizenkoku, located in Saga prefecture, is the name of the place where Hirosada forged this blade. He first signed as Hirosada(広貞) but changed his maker’s name to Yoshiie in the second year of Genwa(1616). We believe this blade is one of the earliest works of Yoshiie before he changed his maker’s name. He often forged swords on behalf of his master, Tadahiro, which means his artistry must have been excellent. He died at the age of 80 in 1656. This swordsmith was serving for the Nabeshima clan, forging swords for the feudal family. Nabeshima clan ruled Hizenkoku during the Edo period, which indicates that Hirosada served a powerful feudal lord. The swordsmiths in the Hizen province worked under the auspices of the Nabeshima clan like Hirosada(Yoshi-Ie). They were able to produce beautiful Jigane-patterned blades, also known as Hizen To, using and mixing carbon steel made in western countries. Hizenkoku had been flourishing by international trading. The geographic location of this domain made it possible to have easy access to western carbon steel. We are confident you will appreciate Hirosada’s craftsmanship by observing this blade. It also accompanies by gorgeous sword mounting. It is appraised as a Hozon Token (保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). *Please keep in mind that there are a couple of hike kizu (scratch) on the blade. Fuchi-Kashira This Fuchi-Kashira feature a delicate gold inlay of a bell cricket (鈴虫, suzumushi) alongside autumn plants. In Japanese culture, the bell cricket has long been cherished as a symbol of autumn. Its clear, gentle chirping is appreciated not as mere sound, but as something poetic and emotionally evocative—capturing the transient beauty of the changing seasons. Unlike in many Western cultures, where insect sounds are often considered noise, in Japan they are regarded as voices—a natural form of music that reflects refined sensitivity to seasonal change. This aesthetic appreciation is deeply rooted in Japanese values. Bell crickets frequently appear in traditional arts such as waka, haiku, and the tea ceremony, serving as emblems of elegance, introspection, and serene. Tsuka and Menuki We believe this Menuki features a motif of the Hanaguruma (花車) design. This design combines various flowers with a stylized depiction of an oxcart. Traditionally, the Hanaguruma motif was believed to invite the presence of deities, and people often used it as a pattern to symbolize their wishes for happiness. Each flower included in the design is thought to hold its own unique meaning. In this particular Menuki, one of the flowers is a chrysanthemum. Saya The surface of this Saya is decorated with the Ishime-Ji (石目地). Its base was hit by Tagane (鏨, chisel for metalworking), and it makes a rough surface that seems stone. Authentication Paper They authenticated the blade on March 24th in the 29th year of Heisei (2017). They appraised it as a Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society.
