Bunkyu (1861-1864)
This is a hirazukuri wakizashi by Gyokushinsai Masakage, an excellent smith from the late Edo period, in the Bizen tradition. It has a sufficient width, shallow sori, and modest dimensions, with koshi-hi and hoso-hi carved, presenting a refined appearance. The jigane is a ko-itame hada, likely forged by skillfully blending old iron, showing a slightly standing grain and bright iron color with fine nie.
