Description

This is a hirazukuri wakizashi by Gyokushinsai Masakage, an excellent smith from the late Edo period, known for his Bizen tradition. It features a sufficient width, shallow sori, and a modest length, with koshi-hi and hoso-hi carved, presenting a refined appearance. The jigane is likely forged by skillfully blending old iron into a ko-itame hada, showing a slightly standing grain and bright iron color with fine nie.

Historical context

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
