This is a tanto by Masakage, born in Toyama, Etchu province. He studied under Suishinshi Masatsugu and later established his forge in Echigo Takada, meeting the demands of the turbulent Bakumatsu period. The blade is signed with the ura kikumon (chrysanthemum crest on the reverse side) and dated Ansei 6 (1859).
