This is a tanto by Minamoto Masakage, dated to the 8th month of Ansei 6 (1859) during the late Edo period. Masakage, whose real name was Goto Risuke, was born in Toyama, Etchu province. He studied under Minamoto Masao and Suishinshi Masatsugu, later establishing his forge in Takada Castle town in Echigo province, meeting the demands of the turbulent Bakumatsu era.
