This is a tanto made by Gyokushinsai Masakage, dated November of Meiji Gannen (1868). Masakage, also known as Goto Reisuke, studied Soshu-den under Suzuki Masao, a senior student of Suishinshi Masahide, and Bizen-den under Masatsugu, grandson of Suishinshi Masahide. His works are rare due to the turbulent Bakumatsu period and the subsequent Haitorei (sword ban).
