Whether the work is the sword of the historical record.

第一部　同定

本刀が、記録に見える刀と同一であるか。

§ 1

The work is the sword recorded as entry 50 of the Kensō hiroku, the register of swords of the Date house of Sendai compiled in 1789: a katana of Yukimitsu of Sagami, with the name and the appraiser’s seal-mark inlaid in gold, a groove on each face, a length of 2 shaku 3 sun 6 bu, and an origami of 1735 at 200 gold mai. Every particular of the entry agrees with the work as the NBTHK described it at its designation in 2024 (§ 9).1, 2, 3

Distinguished from: a second katana bearing the same gold inscription, 行光 and 本阿 with the seal-mark, which measures 74.5 cm and was designated Jūyō Tōken in 1964;4 six other Yukimitsu recorded in Date hands, all short blades or of a different valuation; a signed Bizen Yukimitsu of the same length with an origami of 20 mai;5 an unsigned Yukimitsu of the same length with an origami valued in kan.6

本刀は、寛政元年（1789年）に編まれた仙台伊達家の刀剣台帳『劔槍秘録』の第五十番に記される刀である。同項は、相模国行光の御刀、銘と名判の金象嵌、表裏の樋、長さ二尺三寸六分、享保二十年の折紙・金弐百枚を記し、その記載は、令和六年の指定時に日本美術刀剣保存協会が記した本刀の姿（第九項）にすべて合致する。1, 2, 3

Hon’ami Kōyū’s origami for the sword is dated the third day of the fourth month of Kyōhō 20 (1735) and values it at 200 gold mai, some ten weeks before the gift.1, 2

The attribution to Yukimitsu, the gold inscription and the valuation appear to have been made together in the spring of 1735 in preparation for the gift: an unsigned, much-shortened katana of the shogunal sword store, prepared for presentation. The inference is drawn from the date of the origami relative to the ceremony (§ 2) and from the practice of the store in the period.7, 8

On the nineteenth day of the sixth month of Kyōhō 20 (1735), the shōgun Tokugawa Yoshimune gave a katana by Yukimitsu of Sagami to the Date house of Sendai, on the betrothal of Princess Tone to Date Munemura. The gift is recorded in at least six independent lines of transmission: the Tokugawa jikki, the Kansei chōshū shokafu, the Kinsei tōken nenpyō, the Sendai shishi, the Dai Nihon komonjo and the Date house’s own Kensō hiroku. The sources differ on who received it at the ceremony: the Tokugawa jikki names Date Yoshimura, lord of Sendai; the Kansei chōshū shokafu names the bridegroom, Munemura.9, 10, 1, 11, 12, 13

The mitokoromono by Gotō Tsūjō, bearing the hollyhock crest, received a separate origami dated the seventh day of the twelfth month of Hōreki 7 (1757), at 3 mai. The sword and its fittings were still in the Date house twenty-two years after the gift.1, 2

The sword remained in the Date collection from the compilation of the Kensō hiroku in 1789, through the removal of the collection to Tokyo in the Meiji period (370 swords, 1883 to 1893) and the time of Count Date Okimune, when designations of 1933 and 1934 show the collection intact, until Okimune’s death in July 1947. The conclusion is drawn from the documented continuity of the collection through those years.1, 14, 15

The sword left the Date estate in the post-war dispersal of the collection to the trade, within a documented window: an agent of the estate was engaged from October 1951, and a systematic sale began about January 1955.16, 17, 18

A sayagaki by Hon’ami Nisshū, now lost, recorded the sword as an heirloom of the Date of Ōshū (奥州伊達家伝来). It is reported in a published description of the sword.19

On 6 November 2024 the NBTHK designated the sword Jūyō Tōken at its 70th shinsa, as item 16. Its description of the work concludes that Hon’ami Kōyū’s attribution to Sōshū Yukimitsu may be accepted (本阿弥光勇の極めは首肯されよう).3

In November 2025 Tanobe Michihiro (Tanzan) wrote a sayagaki on the shirasaya. It records Kōyū’s gold attribution and the gift of 1735, following the Tokugawa jikki in naming Yoshimura as the recipient (§ 4), describes the work, cites the 70th Jūyō designation, and concludes that the old attribution is appropriate: 古極ハメハ妥當也.20

令和七年（2025年）十一月（暢月）、田野辺道宏（探山）は白鞘に鞘書を記した。光勇の金象嵌の極めと享保二十年の下賜を記し（拝領者は『徳川実紀』に従って吉村とする。第四項参照）、作域を述べ、第七十回重要刀剣指定に触れて、「古極ハメハ妥當也」と結ぶ。20

忠山 is the posthumous name of Date Yoshimura, so that the register’s 忠山様御拝領 records receipt by the father.

The reading was given without a citation. Withdrawn 11 July 2026: Fukunaga’s glosses distinguish 獅山様, Yoshimura, the fifth lord, from 忠山様, Munemura, the sixth, within one passage.2 忠山 is Munemura. On the recipient at the ceremony, see § 4.

典拠を示さずに述べられた読みであった。令和八年七月十一日撤回。福永の注記は、同じ一節のなかで獅山様（五代吉村）と忠山様（六代宗村）を区別している。2忠山は宗村である。儀式における拝領者については第四項を参照。

The standard of this record

本書の基準

A finding is established when it rests on a primary document read in full, or on extended passages in two or more independent lines of transmission; printings of one text count as one. A finding is well supported when good evidence falls short of that threshold; it is phrased with that reserve. Weaker findings, leads still being examined, and the record of searches that found nothing are kept in the museum’s research file; this record states what the evidence establishes. After 1980 the record includes only documents about the work itself (designations, sayagaki, publications and exhibitions); it never names or points to owners, dealers or sales. The grade of each source is given after its citation:

This record states the history of the work as it can be recovered from the sources cited, as of its date. It is not an authentication, an appraisal or a valuation, and it is not a paper of the NBTHK or of any other body; questions of authenticity, quality, condition and value are left to those whose office they are. Designations are stated as the issuing bodies record them.

所見を確定とするのは、本文を全文確認した一次資料、または二系統以上の独立した文献伝承における長文の記載に立つ場合に限る。同一文献の刊本は一系統と数える。確定に至らないが十分な典拠のある所見は有力とし、その確度に応じた表現で記す。これに満たない所見、検討中の手がかり、および成果のなかった探索の記録は当館の調査記録にとどめ、本書は典拠が示すところのみを記す。昭和五十五年（1980年）以後については、作品そのものに関する文書（指定、鞘書、刊行物、展覧会）のみを記し、所蔵者・刀剣商・売買には触れない。各典拠の等級は引用の末に記す。
