Artisan Nishigaki school, attributed to the 1st-generation Nishigaki Kanshirō (Shirō)
Era Early Edo period
Explanation Along with the Hayashi, Hirata, and Shimizu lineages, the Nishigaki school forms one of the four major traditions of Higo metalworkers. The school’s founder, the first Nishigaki Shirō, was born in Keichō 18 (1613). He studied under Hirata Hikozō and, together with his fellow disciple Shimizu Jingō, came under the guidance of Hosokawa Sansai Tadaoki—celebrated both as a tea devotee and as one of the “Seven Sages of Rikyū.” Through this influence he expressed, on tsuba, a fūin (aesthetic resonance) grounded in the sensibility of tea.
This tsuba is a Higo “canonical” motif: an openwork tsuba of nagekiri kiri (paulownia). While this design is also frequently encountered among works of the Hayashi school, Nishigaki workmanship is characterized by slightly gentler carving contours in comparison to Hayashi; finer, more animated lines in the kebori used for the leaf-veins; and a distinctive treatment whereby the inner edge of the rim takes on a chrysanthemum-flower-like character. Moreover, many Nishigaki examples show an intentionally irregular outline with a subtle sense of distortion.
This piece fully displays all of the above characteristics, and is accordingly appraised as an ichimai tsuba properly attributable to the first-generation Kanshirō. It is rich in refined elegance (gashu).
