Higo Province (Kumamoto) · Edo period
The Higo kinkō schools grew under the patronage of the Hosokawa daimyō and the taste of the tea-master Hosokawa Sansai. Restrained and severe, their iron and soft-metal fittings favour matte surfaces, inlaid gold and silver, and an understated elegance distinct from both Gotō formality and machibori flamboyance. Hayashi, Hirata, and Nishigaki are its core houses.
