Oval-shaped Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. We think the theme of this Tsuba’s design is a tea ceremony. You could find tools that are used in tea ceremony gatherings. For example, a Chashaku (茶杓, spoon), Natsume (棗, Matcha jar), and Chagama (茶釜, pot) are depicted on the front. A twig of Japanese apricot blossom is arranged in a vase. It is probably treated as a Chabana (茶花, a flower that decorates the tea room). The style of Chabana is different from the flower arrangement. People appreciated that a Chabana looked as if it were growing in nature. It is probably why the vase that is depicted in this work seems similar to a tree trunk. Some other items are designed on the backside. A cup-shaped object might be a Chawan (茶碗, tea bowl) or Hibachi (火鉢, brazier), and sticks are Hibashi (火箸, metal chopsticks for brazier). We would say this Tsuba is a work that you could enjoy the tasteful spirit of enjoying the feeling of the seasons.
