This is a sun-nobi tanto by Gassan Sadakazu, featuring a beautifully aligned ayasugi-kitae and concise carvings on both sides, showcasing the distinctive qualities and high skill of the Gassan family. Sadakazu, the grandson of the first Sadakazu who inherited the Gassan lineage in the late Edo period, was born in Meiji 40 (1907) in Yariya-cho, Osaka. He began making swords in his mid-teens, dedicated a tachi for the 700th anniversary of Emperor Go-Toba, and participated in the creation of dedication tachi for the Ise Grand Shrine's Shikinen Sengu. He continuously received special awards at the Shinsaku Meito Ten (New Sword Exhibition), was awarded the Masamune Prize in Showa 44 (1969), and was designated a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Property) in Showa 46 (1971).
