NihontoWatch月山貞一刀匠は、江戸時代より職人が軒を連ねていた大阪鎗屋町の生まれ。廃刀令以後の刀界を牽引し、皇族の守り刀や高級軍人の軍刀などを製作して守り伝えてきた祖父貞一や父貞勝の作刀技術を受け継ぎ、十代中頃から作刀の道を歩み、大正十四年十八歳にしてすでに《後鳥羽天皇七百年祭奉賀賛太刀》を製作するほどに高い技術を示している。大戦後の昭和二十四年には《伊勢神宮式年遷宮》の太刀を謹製(注)、家伝の刀身彫刻にも優れ、昭和三十一年の作刀技術発表会より優秀賞や特賞を連続受賞、昭和四十四年に正宗賞に輝いて無鑑査刀匠に認定され、昭和四十六年には国より重要無形文化財保持者の指定を受けている。作刀活動は国内にとどまらず、米国ボストン美術館での日本刀鍛錬の公開と作品展を開催するなど、日本刀の伝統美を世界に広めた功労者の一人でもある。 美しく詰み澄む綾杉鍛えとされたこの短刀は、貞一刀匠の得意とする、ふくら辺りに張りのある特徴的な姿。平肉厚く仕立てられた地鉄は、古月山とは風合いを異にして洗練味に溢れ、細かな地沸で沸映りが段状に現れ、掻き通された樋の線も澄んで美しい。匂口に柔らか味のある直刃の刃文は、刃境に綾杉鍛えと感応した穏やかなほつれを伴って端正に焼かれ、帽子も崩れることなく綺麗な小丸に返る。化粧鑢の施された筋違鑢に、鑚強く銘が刻されている。 注...その後の昭和四十六年、昭和六十二年と、計三度に亘って《伊勢神宮式年遷宮》の太刀製作に携わっている。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
