This is a splendid and robust hoshi kabuto (star helmet) by Saotome Ienari, a renowned master of the Saotome school. Ienari, the third generation of the Saotome school, resided in Joshu (modern-day Ibaraki Prefecture) and was active from the late Muromachi to Momoyama periods. While he excelled in suji kabuto, this hoshi kabuto is a rare and magnificent example of his work, known for its large size within the Saotome lineage.

Its shinsa grades a piece as 資料 (shiryō, "reference material") across five ascending ranks: Hozon, Kichō, Tokubetsu Kichō, Kōshū Tokubetsu Kichō, and the highest, Jūyō Bunka Shiryō. The 資料 framing reflects the society’s purpose of preserving armour as cultural and historical reference, distinct from the NBTHK’s sword paper tiers.
