Imai Nagatake (1818--1882) was born in Kyoto as the fourth son of Sasaya Chubei, a paper merchant of Mushakoji. While still young he was adopted by Imai Kosaburo, a retainer of the Ichijo family, but after his adoptive father's death he withdrew from the Ichijo household's retainer ranks and entered the workshop of Fujiki Kyubei, a shiire-bori-shi of Goto lineage. During this apprenticeship he trained alongside Wada Isshin, who would later join the Ichijo circle as Wada Seiryu. After establishing himself independently, Nagatake maintained a deep association with Funada Ikkin, a leading senior figure among Goto Ichijo's disciples, and it is said that he constantly measured his own ability against Ikkin's virtuosity, striving to refine his craft through mutual emulation while devoting himself to the instruction of pupils. He took the art name Kyosai and in later years also used the name Butetsu. Notably, unlike other disciples, he did not adopt the character "ichi" from his master's name, signing simply as Nagatake throughout his life. The record Tagane no Hana further notes that he was fond of tea and did not care for sake, that he loved bonsai and flowering plants as nourishment for spiritual cultivation, that he studied kanbun under Kasuga Sen'an, and that he was proficient in waka.

Nagatake's technical identity within the Ichijo school is defined by richly concentrated and splendid iroe[[c:3]] -- dense polychrome metalwork employing gold, silver, shakudo, shibuichi, and suaka in elaborate combination. His preferred ground is shakudo with finely executed nanako-ji, against which motifs stand out with striking effect. He works predominantly in takabori with iroe, supplemented where appropriate by katakiribori, kebori, sukibori, suemon-zogan, and sculptural yobori for menuki. Flowers and grasses were Nagatake's particular forte[[c:1]]; a hallmark of his style is to arrange seasonal plants densely across the entire surface and finish the work in a splendid manner through the use of richly varied colored metals. His chisel handling is characteristically straightforward, and his arrangement of irogane is minute and well considered. The NBTHK descriptions consistently note carving that is delicate, fluent, and graceful, with extremely meticulous execution extending to the smallest details. When working in the composite-forged gotan technique, as in his "day-and-night" chuya tsuba, he employs deliberately contrasting carving methods on obverse and reverse to striking effect, demonstrating outstanding control in both depiction and technique.

The NBTHK setsumei repeatedly characterize Nagatake's finest works as pieces that "fully display the artist's capabilities" and "vividly demonstrate Nagatake's true strengths." His complete sokanagu sets -- coordinated programs of fittings organized around seasonal, auspicious, or literary-historical themes such as the Four Gentlemen, the Four Sacred Creatures, and scenes from the Twenty-four Filial Exemplars -- are described as painstaking works that clearly display the characteristics of the Goto Ichijo lineage[[c:2]]. His hantachi mounting of 1849, produced at the commission of a patron named Hokufu, is assessed as a work created at the height of his powers. Within the Ichijo circle, Nagatake occupies a distinctive position: an artist who absorbed the school's elevated carving vocabulary yet expressed it through a personal idiom of ornamental density and chromatic richness, producing works of outstanding refinement that remain, in the NBTHK's recurrent phrase, carefully executed pieces in which his particular strengths are fully demonstrated.

" Ichijo was the fifth-generation head of the Shichiroemon house, a cadet branch of the Goto family, and trained under Hanzaemon Kamejo before succeeding to the headship at fifteen. His imperial commissions -- fittings for Emperor Kokaku in 1824 and Emperor Komei in 1862 -- earned him the ranks of Hokyo and Hogen respectively, and his atelier in Kyoto attracted a circle of gifted disciples who extended his aesthetic into the Bakumatsu and early Meiji periods. Among them, the celebrated "Five Tigers" (Goko) -- Funada Ikkin, Imai Nagatake, Hashimoto Isshi, Nakagawa Issho, and Wada Isshin -- together with the master's younger brother Goto Koran, constituted one of the most prolific and technically accomplished workshops in the history of Japanese tosogu production. The collective technical identity of the Ichijo school rests upon a foundation of shakudo nanako-ji of surpassing fineness -- described as "minute and orderly, deep and limpid," meriting the appellation kinume-nanako -- upon which elaborate pictorial compositions are built through takabori enriched by polychrome iroe employing gold, silver, shakudo, shibuichi, and suaka. Ichijo himself established the artistic direction by shifting from the canonical iebori subjects of dragons and lions toward compositions centered on close observation (shasei), rendering grasses, flowers, insects, birds, and landscapes with meticulous carving and refined dignity. This painterly sensibility pervades the entire school. Nagatake brought a distinctive ornamental density, arranging seasonal plants across entire surfaces with richly varied colored metals.

" Ikkin developed an unrivaled command of kosuki-bori -- a bold, thick chiseling technique that even Ichijo conceded was "beyond my own reach[[c:1]]" -- and his dragon subjects carried a distinctive forcefulness. " Isshin absorbed the hereditary vocabulary while concentrating creative zeal into individual passages of invention, and Issho achieved works of luxurious, courtly elegance through refined kinu-nanako and precise kebori. Koran, working in a manner akin to his elder brother yet "finished with an even more delicate and nuanced sensibility," brought the Shichiroemon branch to its most accomplished expression. Across the school, the favored tsuba form is the sumi-iri mokko-gata, and many works exhibit chuya shitate -- "day-and-night" construction using contrasting alloys on obverse and reverse. Complete daisho soroe kanagu sets, coordinated around seasonal, auspicious, or literary-historical themes, represent the school's highest format. " This standard was transmitted faithfully through the circle. " The school's productions are consistently praised for an elevated, Kyoto-inflected refinement that balances splendor and restraint in just measure. Learn more →

NBTHK Certificate
Hozon Tōsōgu保存刀装具
Fitting Worthy of Preservation
›

Certifies a genuine fitting worth preserving: a correct signature, or, if unsigned, an identifiable era and school, with recognized artistic and craft value.

About the NBTHK›

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
