This is a tsuba made by Shigenaga of the Shimizu school in Higo province during the Late Edo period. The iron tsuba has a tate-marugata (vertical oval) shape with sukashi (openwork) carving of kasa (hats) on both sides. It features silver and brass inlay, with the silver inlay intentionally incomplete to evoke a sense of rustic elegance.
