This is a tanto by Mihara ju Masasada, active around the Tensho era (Momoyama period). The Mihara smiths established their forges near Mihara Castle, which was developed by Kobayakawa Takakage, to meet the demands of warriors in western Japan. They maintained the style of early Nanbokucho period smiths like Masashige, Masahiro, and Masanobu, and are considered the main lineage of smiths who inscribed their residence as 'Mihara ju'.
