NihontoWatchKatana in Shirasaya with Koshirae We divide works in to Saijo Saku, Jyojyo Saku, Jyo Saku,and Regular Saku. This piece is ranked as Jyojyo Saku for Miyairi Kiyohira. Shape: slightly wide with standard thickness, little difference in width between the base and the tip, and a somewhat shallow curvature. Jigane: The ko-itame hada is tightly forged and covered with ji-nie. Hamon: redominantly nioi-based, featuring slightly slanted gunome and choji-midare patterns. Ko-nie and ashi are present, with occasional patches of ara-nie and sunagashi. Special Feature: Miyairi Kiyohira was the younger brother of Miyairi Shohei. He learned sword-forging techniques from his elder brother, Yukihira, and received numerous awards. In 1989, he changed his smith name to Kiyomune. Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
We could not find an authenticity certificate on the seller’s listing. Japanese swords and fittings are normally papered by the NBTHK (or the NTHK).
