The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This katana by smith Norishige (吉田盛三) measures 72.5cm and was made in Showa 60 (1985). It features a ko-itame hada with masame in the shinogi-ji, and a gunome hamon with a low height difference. The blade is in excellent condition, characteristic of a gendaito, with no signs of significant polishing wear, and is noted for its exceptional sharpness. It comes with a koshirae featuring modern fittings, a slightly slender tsuka, a Kyoto-style openwork tsuba, and a black ro-saya with partial same-hada finish.
