Description A pair of menuki, unsigned. Made of shakudō and carved in the Mino style, depicting a horse and foliage with chrysanthemums and bellflowers on each. The flowers are gilded and the horse's body show remains of what appears to be silver, rare on this style of work. Symbolism The horse is strongly associated with the samurai class, symbolizing strength, vitality, freedom, and speed. In Shintoism horses are considered sacred messengers from the realm of Gods. Chrysanthemums have always been associated with the imperial house, and besides that represent longevity and autumn. The bellflowers are associated with unchanging love, sincerity, and faithfulness.
